01Extraction

The black gold, how oil is often called, is the main ingredient used in production of the best for your car VERVA fuel. Oil is called a mineral oil due to the fact its extracted from the ground as a result of drilling, it is a fundamental strategic and energetic raw material.

The drilling for oil is performed both on land and sea, and they may  be as deep as 1 km. A group of highly qualified specialized geologists searches for the oil deposits, they perform numerous research tasks and tests in order to point the most probable location of oil.

The extracted oil is described as raw and may be yellow-dark brown, green, black or even red color. However, it can’t be directly used as technical fuel, because it has to be cleaned and refined, which means undergoing processing in the refinery.

Before the VERVA fuel becomes the most precious product made of the black gold, it must be perfected by the team of specialists at PKN ORLEN, who apply sever additives to the gasoline during technological production, thus ensuring longer life-span of the engine, increasing the satisfaction of the driver.

02Transport

The extracted oil in form of hydrocarbon blend is transported by either tankers or pipelines to refineries for further processing.

The oil pipelines are made of steel pipes with internal diameter of even 120 cm. A specialized system of pumps built along the pipeline helps to push the raw material through the pipes. The oil from the bottom of the sea is transported by tankers. The loading takes place on offshore oil platforms or near loading buoys and unloading takes place in refinery terminals.

PKN ORLEN uses a pipeline network of over 2 thousand kilometers in order to transport oil .

Annually, the refineries of ORLEN Group in Poland, Czech Republic and Lithuania can process approximately 32 millions of tons of oil.

03Rafinery

When the crude oil transported through pipelines reaches refinery, it undergoes distillation process, that is splitting  to particular carbon and hydrogen compounds, which after processing and enriching create VERVA fuels and other oil-related substances. 

FRACTIONAL DISTILLATION

The processing of crude oil begins with fractional distillation. The raw material is heated up to such temperature at which the distillation process can begin, in which the ingredients of the raw material are becoming gases at first, and after cooling and condensation they become liquids again. That way we obtain oil fractions. The resulting material is then being cleaned in order to create final products. In our refineries we use continuous fractional distillation, which allows to directly pick up different products of distillation.

CRACKING – DESTRUCTIVE DISTILLATION

In the next stage, the half-finished products undergo the cracking process, which is controller break up of long hydrocarbon chains in the heavy fractions obtained in the refining process of crude oil, to compounds with shorter hydrocarbon chains  such as these in gasoline or diesel fuel.

REFORMING – MORE OCTANES

Reforming of gasoline is the second, beside cracking, process used in producing gasoline. It enriches the gasoline fractions in order to raise their octane number.

VERVA fuels contain several enriching additives, thus the gasoline gains qualities characteristic for this type of fuel.

04Spedition

VERVA fuels from our refineries go to gas station chains in Poland, Lithuania and Czech Republic.

The primary means of transport of the fuel in Poland is a network of our own pipelines, having almost 400 km, and third-party pipelines of almost 600 km. In VERVA fuel logistics we also use railway and  tank trucks. We are using more than 40 storage bases in Poland, Lithuania and Czech Republic. The overall storage capacity which PKN ORLEN can use amounts to over 7 million cubic meters.
